Examines various studies conducted including the author's interviews with hundreds of police officers across the United States. Shares selected case studies of officer-involved shootings and their outcome and offers information on support options for both officers and surviving loved ones. Includes photographs, illustrations, and complete bibliography. This book is not about the tactical aspects of officer-involved shootings. It is about the emotions that follow. For that reason, some information may be viewed as emotionally disturbing.
History
Rebecca Stincelli began researching "suicide by cop" while working with the deputies of the Sacramento County (CA) Sheriff's Department as a crisis interventionist and post trauma liaison for victims of violent crimes. As a law enforcement instructor, Rebecca was given the opportunity to present the perspectives of both the loved ones of the decedent and the officers involved. It was there that she came to understand that there is often more than one victim involved in a "suicide by cop" incident. The other victim is most certainly the officer involved.
